Crystal Veil won the $75,000 James & Eleanor Casey Memorial at Charles Town, completing a sweep of the track’s three stakes for West Virginia-bred two-year-old fillies, according to The Racing Biz.
The 2-5 favorite finished two lengths clear of On a Pedestal, covering seven furlongs in 1:29.14.
Crystal Veil recovers from stumble to set the pace
Ridden by Jeiron Barbosa, Crystal Veil stumbled slightly at the break before taking command entering the clubhouse turn.
“She made a slight stumble at the break, but then she recovered and made the lead pretty easily,” Barbosa told The Racing Biz.
Barbosa said he had not yet asked his filly for more when he saw rival jockey Jose Montano urging his mount entering the far turn.
On a Pedestal finished second, 10¾ lengths ahead of third-place Kickin’ With Caity. A Notable Nature finished fourth.
Stakes victory follows a week of missed training
Trainer Anthony Farrior said Crystal Veil had been a little sick after her previous start in the Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic and missed about a week of training.
Farrior said her natural early speed gave him confidence she could handle the added distance in the Casey Memorial.
The daughter of Authentic is owned by James F. Miller and Fuzzy Whiz LLC. With the victory, Crystal Veil has four wins from five career starts and nearly $150,000 in earnings.
