Types of WV online sports betting bonuses
There are several types of sports betting bonuses that can increase your sports betting bankroll in one way or another. Which promotions you choose is a personal choice and based on what matters most to you and the terms and conditions of the bonus.
Here are some of the different types of sports betting offers:
Deposit match bonuses
Matched bonuses give the player a percentage of his or her deposit in ‘promotional cash’. For example, a player making a $20 bet with a 100% matched bonus is given an additional $20 to bet with. He or she would be able to make either two $20 bets or a $40 bet. As a player, make sure you know the matching percentage. Don’t assume that all matching bonuses are 100%.
Bonus bets
Bonus bets are similar to matching bonuses. They are given as ‘promotional’ cash. You’ll place a bet through the mobile app using the promotional cash. If you lose, you only lose the promotional cash.
Bonus bets are different from matching bonuses. If you win, you have to pay back the promotional cash.
For example, if you sign up and receive twenty dollars in bonus bets and make a bet that nets $30, you will receive only $10. You won $30 but you have to pay back the $20 given to you by the book.
Limits and caps
Sports betting operators have to make a profit to stay in business, so they can’t offer endless bonus bets. Typically, any bonus will have a limit or cap. This limits how much the operator will match or give away, or cap how much you can claim.
If it’s not clearly stated look for the small print that states any limits. It will look something like this, “Make your first deposit and receive a 100% match up to $250.” In this example, the sports betting venue limits (stops) matching after you’ve bet $250.
Or the amount you can claim may be capped. If you deposit $300 with a 50% matching bonus and won a 2.0 odds, you’d expect to make up to $450 (your $300 + $150 in bonus). But if it comes with a $100 cap this means you can only receive $100 from the matching money, not $150. Your payout would be $400, not $450.
Expiration times
Matching bonuses usually have expiration times. This just means any promotional cash must either be used in the allotted time or winnings paid in promotional cash claimed in the allotted time. Expiry times are usually from 10 to 30 days.
The typical fine prints will say something like this, “Players must activate and play through the bonus money within 30 days after being credited with the bonus money, otherwise it will expire.”
Rollover requirements
The purpose of rollover requirements is to protect the sportsbook from players taking advantage of bonus bets.
Rollover stipulations require you to bet a minimum amount before promotional winnings can the collected. This helps the sportsbook retain new players, which is the reason they offer bonus bets, and stop players from gaming the system.
How it works. A player may receive a $20 matching bonus with an industry-standard 5x rollover. In this case, the player would need to bet at a minimum of $100 ($20 X 5) before being able to collect promotional winnings.
Usually, rollover requirements only apply to the promotional cash, but read the fine print. Some sportsbooks apply the rollover requirement to the initial deposit along with the promotional cash.
Odds requirements
Some welcome offers restrict on what bets you can place promotional cash. Not surprisingly they require the placement of bets on low-odd plays. Its all about finding the right mix of odds requirements and rollover requirements. Typically, if the rollover requirement is minimal then the odds requirement is likely strict, and vice-versa.
Minimum deposit
To qualify for a bonus, a minimum deposit is always necessary. It varies by sports book operators but is usually reasonable. If the one you are looking at is more than you want to start with, find one with a lower amount.
A typical welcome offer will begin with the opening of a new account and a minimum deposit of $50. It comes with a 20% matching bonus. Therefore, you will receive $10 in promotional cash on the $50 deposit. It has a $100 limit, so for any deposit over $500 you will only receive $100 in promotional cash.
You must first bet the deposit amount, $50, and then you may use the matching bonus of $10. You have 30 days to use your bonus promotional cash or it expires.
You may use the matching promotional cash on any wager offered.
In this case, the low match is offset by low rollover requirements and the ability to have unrestricted bets.

- Validation: Your account must be verified and approved by the sportsbook before cashing out.
- Opt-in: Operators may require you to take action to claim the bonus (usually a simple click of a button or link).

WV responsible gambling resources
The unfortunate reality of gambling is that things can get out of hand. Sports betting is often a fun activity, but it becomes less so when you lose control.
Legal sportsbook apps offer features that you can enact on your account. You can instruct the book to limit your deposit amounts, the amount you can wager and how much time you spend on the app.
If those controls aren’t enough, there are several resources available to problem gamblers or their families in West Virginia:
- 1-800-GAMBLER — The Problem Gambling Help Network of West Virginia.
- Gamblers Anonymous — A peer support group for problem gamblers.
- Gam-Anon — A peer support group for families and friends of problem gamblers.
- Gamtalk — An online discussion forum for problem gamblers.
