The NBA has named Kalshi and Polymarket its preferred prediction markets under agreements that include restrictions on market offerings, prohibitions on trading by league and team personnel, and cooperation on suspicious-trading investigations.
The league also reached an information-sharing agreement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The reports describe a national sponsorship and oversight framework; no West Virginia-specific change was reported.
NBA sets limits on markets and insider trading
The partnerships give the NBA a role in determining which markets the exchanges can offer on its games. Operators will have information-sharing obligations related to investigations and suspicious trading, while league and team personnel will be barred from trading on league events.
“We will have the right to approve the types of markets that are available on our games, which is a very important component for us,” NBA executive Scott Kaufman-Ross told the Associated Press in its report published by wowktv.com.
The Associated Press reported that the NBA expects the prediction-market agreements to carry restraints similar to those imposed on its sportsbook partners. Those sportsbook restrictions include wagers on the first statistic of a game, the opening tip and certain under bets involving players expected to play only a few minutes.
Sportsbusinessjournal.com reported that the agreements include official NBA data supplied by Sportradar, along with coordinated integrity monitoring and limits on markets the league considers vulnerable to manipulation.
Sponsorship rights carry substantial commercial value
Kalshi and Polymarket will receive rights to use league, team and event logos in their apps, plus promotional rights across media channels, according to sportsbusinessjournal.com. Its report also said the framework allows other prediction operators to advertise during games and sponsor teams.
Industry sources cited by sportsbusinessjournal.com estimated the deals’ combined annual value at $100 million to $200 million, including rights fees, committed media spending, data fees and revenue shares. That is an estimate, not publicly disclosed final financial terms.
Federal cooperation leaves legal questions unresolved
The NBA’s memorandum with the CFTC creates channels for sharing integrity-related information. Sportsbusinessjournal.com reported that it also provides for league input on regulation of exchanges, including those outside the NBA framework.
Reuters, in a report published by gvwire.com, said the CFTC reiterated its position that it oversees prediction markets. Multiple states have challenged that position, arguing the markets constitute gambling subject to state law.
Sportsbusinessjournal.com reported that the commercial agreements address the possibility that U.S. courts could restrict or prohibit sports event contracts. The partnerships therefore do not resolve the broader dispute over who regulates those products.
