After a record-breaking month in March, online casinos in West Virginia have leveled off a bit. But iGaming in the Mountain State did bounce back in May.
According to figures from the West Virginia Lottery, online casinos in WV combined for $17.9 million in revenue last month, up from the previous month, albeit by just a 0.007% margin.
Still, it was a bounce-back May for iGaming operators in West Virginia, who combined for a state-record $20.68 million in March.
Breaking down WV online casino revenue for May 2024
The four-year-old West Virginia online casino industry has found its footing in 2024.
As noted, just two months ago, iGaming platforms combined for a state record in March.
Certainly that set a lofty mark for WV online casinos. And while they didn’t get close to that standard in April or May, both months sit among West Virginia’s best ever.
In fact, May’s total of $17.9 million stands as the second-best single month in West Virginia, obviously only behind March.
Hollywood Charles Town, highlighted by DraftKings Casino WV, set the May standard with $7.4 million in revenue. As per usual, Greenbrier was right on Hollywood’s heels with $6.4 million, powered by BetMGM Casino WV and FanDuel Casino WV.
Licensee | Revenue | Tax |
---|---|---|
Hollywood Charles Town | $7,408,289 | $1,111,243 |
Greenbrier | $6,427,087 | $964,063 |
Mountaineer | $3,398,873 | $509,831 |
Mardi Gras | $698,033 | $104,705 |
Total | $17,932,282 | $2,689,842 |
Sportsbooks in WV also enjoying solid stretch
While online casinos generate the bulk of state tax revenue for the state, sportsbooks in West Virginia also had a solid month in May.
Sports betting operators pocketed some $3.7 million in revenue last month off of $32.95 million in accepted bets. That reflects a hold of 11.2% for WV sportsbooks, up from 10.2% set in April despite month-over-month revenue dropping by a fraction of a percentage.
The race for No. 1 licensee continues to be tight in the Mountain State. Hollywood Charles Town — fueled by the likes of DraftKings Sportsbook WV, ESPN Bet and Fanatics — reported the highest handle in the state at $14.92 million, while Greenbrier (BetMGM Sportsbook WV and FanDuel Sportsbook WV) was second with $13.71 million.
Greenbier posted the month’s highest revenue, however, at just over $2 million, followed by Hollywood’s total of $1.3 million.
Licensee | Handle | Revenue | Tax |
---|---|---|---|
Hollywood Charles Town | $14,923,345 | $1,349,768 | $134,977 |
Greenbrier | $13,707,521 | $2,012,621 | $201,262 |
Mountaineer | $2,665,267 | $270,473 | $27,047 |
Wheeling Island | $1,061,109 | $23,179 | $2,318 |
