West Virginia online casino play is drawing new scrutiny after research cited by Finance Yahoo found demand for mobile slots increased on days when retirees received Social Security payments. The reporting also said one online operator logged 43 million slot bets from about 16,000 players in a single month.

Matt Mullis, a doctoral student researcher at the West Virginia University Center for Gaming Research and Development, told Finance Yahoo that West Virginia’s iGaming market keeps expanding. “It seems like every month West Virginia sets a new record for iGaming revenue,” Mullis said.

Research points to heavier slot activity on payment days

Finance Yahoo reported that Mullis’ analysis of West Virginia gaming data found demand for Hot Spot mobile slot machines increases on the second, third and fourth Wednesday of the month, the days when many retirees receive Social Security payments.

Moneywise separately reported the same link and said Mullis told My Buckhannon that slot demand on Hot Spot rises on those payment days. Neither outlet quantified the size of the increase, and the reporting did not identify which specific West Virginia operator accounted for the 43 million bets.

The volume figure itself appeared in both Finance Yahoo and Moneywise: 43 million slot bets from about 16,000 players in a single month through one operator.

Why the findings matter for older adults

Both Finance Yahoo and Moneywise framed the West Virginia data as part of a broader responsible-gambling concern involving older adults. The reports said seniors may be especially vulnerable because online gambling is easy to access from home and on mobile devices.

Moneywise cited research published in The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry saying older adults are vulnerable to gambling disorder because of age-related cognitive decline and reduced executive function. It also reported that loneliness, bereavement, shrinking social circles and certain medications can contribute to gambling risk.

Finance Yahoo reported that gambling addiction treatment is not covered by Medicare as a whole, though state grants may help in some cases.

For West Virginia players and families, the immediate takeaway is not a change in law or access, but a clearer warning sign around spending patterns tied to benefit-payment dates. If gambling stops feeling like entertainment, help is available through responsible-gambling support resources.
