Mobile and smartphone usage accounts for more than half the online traffic worldwide. Mobile use is growing significantly every year.
People rarely use their phones to talk anymore. Instead, they are texting, reading email, catching up on the news, playing games, and yes, even sports betting.
The sports betting and casino gaming industries cannot overlook the convenience of mobile gaming. As such, most mobile gaming apps are available on the two most popular platforms: Apple iOS and Android.
Today, there is a highly competitive environment between the most popular sports betting apps trying to earn entry into regulated sports betting markets around the US.
West Virginia mobile sports betting has a lot of room to grow and we are tracking online gambling launch dates in the state. There are three online licenses for each of the five WV sportsbooks. Only two of those are currently in use. Let’s take a closer look at WV mobile online gambling apps.
WV sportsbook apps for iOS and Android devices
WV sports betting launched in Aug. 2018 and mobile sports betting followed in Dec. 2018.
BetLucky Sportsbook was West Virginia’s first mobile sports betting app. Unfortunately, it was shut down, along with its retail partners, Mardi Gras Sportsbook and Wheeling Island Sportsbook after just two months of betting.
Now the owner of the two properties, Delaware North, is seeking a new sports betting partner which makes it unlikely that BetLucky will return.
There is good news, though. The West Virginia Lottery just approved five new online sports betting licenses, including licenses for:
Sports betting mobile apps tend to have easy an easy-to-use interface, making them suitable for mobile. BetLucky’s app organizes bets by sport and type of bet. Quick access to the betting slip helps players keep track of their bets.
Looking to the future: Potential WV mobile sports betting apps
Although it’s difficult to tell precisely when they will launch, the following sportsbooks will likely become online options in WV this year.
DraftKings Sportsbook is the most successful New Jersey app that will be available in WV, as well. It has been a leader in online revenue and handle in NJ since it launched in the fall of 2018.
DraftKings reached a licensing agreement back in December with Penn National Gaming, the operator of Hollywood Casino Sportsbook.
FanDuel Sportsbook is one of the top-grossing mobile apps in the NJ online betting market. Each month it is near the top for revenue and total handle.
The sportsbook has partnered with The Greenbrier Resort to help both its retail and online sportsbooks. A mobile app will debut at some point in the next coming months.
William Hill Sportsbook
William Hill Sportsbook is a well-known fixture in Nevada, as well as the NJ online sports betting space. It helps service multiple sportsbooks in the Garden State and will likely do so in WV, too.
William Hill is currently partners with both the Hollywood Casino Sportsbook and the Mountaineer Sportsbook. There is no timetable for the release of a mobile app at this time.
WV Online Casino Gaming Apps
West Virginia online casinos became legal on March 27, 2019, when Gov. Jim Justice failed to act on the bill passed by the legislature earlier in the month.
The law allows each of the five WV casinos a license to launch online casino games. Players can expect games similar to those found in a brick-and-mortar casino, including:
Look for legal online casinos in West Virginia to go live later this year.
FAQ For Mobile Online Gambling In WV
Why use a mobile sportsbook?
A mobile sportsbook app allows you to have everything you’d find in a land-based sportsbook, but with the convenience of not traveling anywhere. With just a wireless signal, you’re able to wager on sports games from your couch just as you would the betting window at the casino.
What else is unique about the mobile offering?
As opposed to betting from your desktop or in person, the mobile app is extremely quick and easy to use without any additional add-ons. Your account is also more secure on your phone or tablet rather than on your home computer.
What mobile device do I need?
There is a long list of phones and tablets that will let you access the sportsbook apps. Pretty much any type of newer device that is running the updated versions of iOS or Android should work.
What about geolocation?
Your phone already has some version of geolocation built in so that when you access these apps, the data is shared and the sportsbook can determine your location. You must be within the state of West Virginia to use mobile gambling apps.
Are there additional costs?
There are no additional costs for wagering online. However, if you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network, you may accrue data costs from your service provider based on your plan and data limits.
