West Virginia sports betting was legalized in 2018. The first few land-based casino sportsbooks have begun taking bets, and online sportsbooks are now live as well.
West Virginia casinos and sports betting
WV sports betting is now live at all of the state’s five casinos:
- Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races
- Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort
- The Casino Club at The Greenbrier
- Mardi Gras Casino and Resort
- Wheeling Island Hotel
Four of those casinos are also thoroughbred and/or greyhound racetracks; The Greenbrier is an exclusive, private casino, owned by Gov. Jim Justice. The casinos all have slot machines and table games. And now most of them have sportsbooks, much like the casinos in Nevada.
The state has been reacting quickly to the new sports betting law, working diligently to get regulations live and sportsbooks open after a new law passed early in 2018.
WV sports betting online
The state also legalized online wagering as part of a new law, which means you will be able to bet via sports betting apps and sports betting sites. BetLucky app was the first WV online sports betting app and served Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras until it shut down in early March.
Now, sports bettors are waiting for other well-known sports betting apps to launch. Recently the West Virginia lottery issued online sports betting licenses to:
Who can bet on sports in West Virginia?
You will have to be 21 years of age to bet on sports in the state.
If you want to bet online or via mobile devices in West Virginia, you must be located within the state. You do not need to be a resident of the state in order to register for a real-money sports betting account. That means people from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc. could simply cross into the state and register an account and place bets while on West Virginia soil.
Millions of people live within driving distance of WV’s borders and its five casinos, so there could be a great deal of mobile wagering soon after launch.
Backstory of WV sports betting
West Virginia sports betting is possible because of a US Supreme Court case brought by the state of New Jersey in the spring of 2018 that allowed states other than Nevada to legalize and regulate wagering. West Virginia was the first state to pass a new law in the wake of that decision.
The West Virginia Lottery Commission is overseeing the state’s sports betting industry.
