In late August, West Virginia sports betting launched when Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races accepted the first legal sports bet.
Since then, all five West Virginia casinos opened a sports book and recently, the Mountain State welcomed its first mobile sports betting app.
As one of the first states in the nation to legalize and launch sports betting, West Virginia is ready to welcome sports bettors from neighboring states to the Mountain State. Many of the WV sportsbooks are conveniently located within driving distance of Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
Following is everything you need to know when it comes to choosing where to place a sports wager in West Virginia.
West Virginia online sports betting
Of course, the most convenient place to get in the game is from wherever you are. Currently, there is only one way to place legal sports bets online in West Virginia.
The Betlucky online and mobile app went live at the end of December when the land-based sportsbooks at Mardi Gras Casino and Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack opened.
The two casinos, along with software provider Miomni, partnered to launch the first online sportsbook available for players located in West Virginia.
The app is available for both iOS and Android users. While you do not need to be a resident of West Virginia to bet online, but you must be 21 years old and located within the Mountain State to do so.
DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook, and William Hill Sportsbook all have plans to launch mobile sports betting in West Virginia in the coming months.
The SportsBook at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is located in the northeastern part of the state in Ranson, part of Jefferson County near Martinsburg and Winchester.
What makes Hollywood Casino an ideal location is its proximity to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. It is only 50 miles from the nation’s capital making Hollywood Casino a great destination for sports bettors along the Potomac.
Hollywood Casino, owned by Penn National, is the state’s largest casino. Penn National has made it clear sports betting is a priority and it shows.
Currently, Hollywood Casino is the leading all WV sportsbooks in terms of handle and revenue. The venue has 24 monitors displaying odds and several 80-inch high-definition televisions filling 50 feet of wall space.
William Hill Sports Book at Mountaineer Casino
The William Hill Sports Book at Mountaineer Casino is located in New Cumberland, West Virginia. This is the state’s most northern-positioned casino. It sits right between Ohio and Pennsylvania, on the bank of the Ohio River. It is just north of New Manchester, WV.
Western PA is just 45 miles east of the WV casino giving sports bettors in the area options for enjoying game day.
The William Hill Sports Book opened up for sports betting on November 21. It has a video wall of high-definition televisions and a large, comfortable seating area with which to enjoy game day.
FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier
The FanDuel Sportsbook at Greenbrier is located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This is in the southeastern part of the state near Lewisburg. The closest places of any size are Roanoke, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
The FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier began accepting legal sports wagers on September 13, 2018.
Of interest is the fact that the Greenbrier is the only private casino in America. Membership is required to place a sports bet and is something that sets it apart from other West Virginia casinos.
The sportsbook is a smaller lounge, however, it does include 21 high-definition televisions for viewing.
Mardi Gras Casino and Resort
The Mardi Gras Casino is located in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. This is in the western part of the state, northwest of Charleston. Huntington, the largest town in WV, is around 43 miles west. The closest major city is Columbus, Ohio which is only about 150 miles northwest from the casino.
Mardi Gras, owned by casino operator Delaware North, opened its Bet Lucky Sportsbook for business in December 2018, after a short delay. It offers a multi-screen video wall along with seating and tables in a sports bar setting.
Wheeling Island Hotel
Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Racetrack is located in Wheeling, West Virginia. This is in the northern part of the state, just north of Moundsville. Wheeling is an hour south of the Mountaineer Casino. Similarly, Pittsburgh, PA, is the closest major city outside of the state.
Wheeling Island, also owned by Delaware North, launched its book with Mardi Gras Casino in late December. First came the sports bar, then came the bets. The Bet Lucky Sportsbook is very similar to the one at Mardi Gras, with several television walls and high-top table seating.
