WV Sports Betting: WVU Football Is Over, Now What?

Posted on December 16, 2019 - Last Updated on January 20, 2020

Sports betting in West Virginia came back online in late August, just in time for the 2019 college football season. It was perfect timing for a state that rallies behind WVU football.

For the last three months, sports betting handle in the Mountain State has steadily grown.

A significant reason for that growth is the Mountaineers because West Virginia loves its football.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, since its launch, almost half of the bets have been on WV college football and the NFL. While the NFL holds the lead, it is only a slight one.

Now that WVU football’s less-than-stellar season ended, what’s next? Luckily, there are some pretty enticing sports betting events coming up.

NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl

Since NFL betting is leading the action, there is still plenty of play left. The regular season might be winding down, but the real fun begins as playoff games get underway.

And then, of course, there is the NFL championship game. Betting on the Super Bowl typically attracts the most action all year.

DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook were both operating last year during the Super Bowl in New Jersey.

If the excitement around the big game last year is any indication, West Virginia online gambling fans can expect special promotions and contests to make Super Bowl LIV one to remember.

There is no need to wait until Super Bowl weekend to get in on the action. Both sportsbooks offer Super Bowl futures:

College basketball and March Madness

Betting on March Madness is also hugely popular. Before Selection Sunday on March 15, there will be plenty of college basketball betting action.

The WVU men’s basketball team is off to a good start, following a dismal 2018 season. Its 9-1 season is one of its best starts in years and put the team on top of the Big 12.

An email from DraftKings told Play WV what to expect as the sports calendar transitions from football to basketball:

“With the college basketball season tipping off, we expect our offerings in this sport to increase, especially as the new year approaches.

“Our futures are constantly being updated and made available for customers in West Virginia, and we have seen multiple users engage with these markets, especially in support of the Mountaineers.”

Of course, with such a strong start, everyone is asking if WVU will make it to the Big Dance this year.

Unfortunately, the Marshall Thundering Herd is not off to as great a start as WVU. The Herd has been struggling, and the team’s 3-6 record reflects that.

However, the season is early, and there is plenty of time for the Herd to turn things around.

Futures betting in West Virginia

Apparently, futures betting is popular on sports betting apps in West Virginia. DraftKings elaborates:

“To date, customers in West Virginia have taken advantage of our futures market. For example, we had a number of customers take the Washington Nationals to win the World Series.

“We paid out more than six figures in total to customers in West Virginia on the Nationals to win the World Series.”

Here’s hoping WV sports bettors be as lucky on their Super Bowl and March Madness futures.
