Online casinos in WV are smashing revenue records

The online casinos in West Virginia closed out the year with a great performance. Combined, they totaled nearly $7 million in revenue in December.

This is a significant increase from November betting, when WV casinos finished the month with around $5.9 million in profits.

The incredible showing also beat out Mountain State’s previous record for a single month in terms of revenue. October’s earnings of around $6.4 million held the prior mark.

The online casinos were consistent in the final month of 2021, earning at least $1.6 million each week. They’ve now seen over $1 million in revenue for 13 consecutive weeks.

The week of Dec. 18 was the state’s best, when online casinos brought in just shy of $2 million. The only time weekly revenue exceeded $2 million was Oct. 9.

Revenue wasn’t the only area where WV casinos outdid themselves. They accepted more than $223 million in bets in December, also setting a new record.

Let’s take a deeper look at last month’s report and how the individual mobile apps did.

WV online casino revenue, December 2021

The state’s earnings rose 18% compared to November’s.

Overall, revenue increased during the month. After not hitting $1.6 million in any week last month, WV casinos made at least that every week in December.

The Greenbrier led all others with more than $3.5 million in profits. This was solid growth and an increase of about $300,000 from November.

Its two online casinos, BetMGM WV and FanDuel WV, earned a minimum of $800,000 per week. Their best week was Dec. 18, with around $980,000.

With the impressive month, the apps have now reached $700,000 in revenue for eight straight weeks.

Hollywood Casino placed second for the month at almost $2.6 million.

Last month was much more profitable for its DraftKings Casino WV app, bringing in around $600,000 in additional funds.

Its revenue hit at least $600,000 in two of the four weeks, including about $750,000 for Dec. 18.

November betting didn’t reach that amount once.

Mountaineer Casino also saw its online earnings boosted. BetRivers WV and Caesars WV’s revenue eclipsed $885,000, up about $155,000.

They had more consistent results this past month, generating over $180,000 each week. The online casinos surpassed $200,000 in weekly profits in six of the last nine weeks.

WV online casino handle, December 2021

The more than $223 million wagered in December was a sizable surge from the month prior. Handle increased 13% in total.

November’s ceiling was December’s low, as the handle exceeded $53 million every week. Betting continuously kept growing each week, topping out at just over $60 million for the week of Dec. 25.

This is the first time ever that the weekly handle has reached $60 million.

The Greenbrier again led everyone else in this category, too. Oddly enough, its online handle was almost exactly what it was a month ago.

Bets were just short of $105 million, which was about $65,000 less than November’s production.

BetMGM and FanDuel’s best showing was over $28 million in the final week.

Hollywood and DraftKings closed the gap significantly, posting a handle of more than $94 million. This is a jump of around $23 million from last month.

DraftKings took in at least $21 million every week. Its highest handle topped $26 million.

The week of Dec. 25 was exceptionally strong for the operator, as it had only brought in $20 million in bets three times before the month began.

If Hollywood ever decides to launch another online casino into the WV market, it will likely compete with The Greenbrier on both fronts immediately.

Mountaineers saw more handle last month as well. Although it was not as much as Hollywood, its Caesars and BetRivers’ handle saw an uptick of about $3 million to nearly $25 million.

Mountaineers also set a new record for weekly handle, accepting more than $8 million on Dec. 18.

WV is now at over $1.1 billion in handle for the fiscal year that began in July. The state’s revenue has been sitting at around $35 million during this time.

Online casino betting appears to be trending upward and could get more help with additional platforms.

WynnBet partnered with Delaware North in November, while Wazdan is another operator ready to debut in WV.
