West Virginia Online Casino Revenue Dips Slightly In April Before Help Arrives

It wasn’t the best month for West Virginia online casinos. After seeing revenue growth in every month since debuting last July, figures actually decreased in April.

The Mountain State’s online casinos generated about $3.8 million in earnings last month, down around $150,000 from March.

Although it wasn’t the best performance, casinos still managed to bring in over $1 million in weekly revenue twice. Their best showing was the final week of the month, with almost $1.1 million.

Similar to last month, online casinos earned at least $800,000 each week. Their worst week netted around $810,000, on April 17.

The disappointing April revenue can be attributed to the reduction in wagers. The state’s overall betting handle dropped by over $8 million from the previous month.

WV casinos totaled nearly $115 million in overall handle.

Coincidentally, this lull comes just as the WV market is expanding. This report includes two weeks of betting figures from the Mountaineer Casino’s mobile app, BetRivers Casino WV.

The month of May will also feature betting from FanDuel Casino WV. It launched last week thanks to its partnership with The Greenbrier.

WV online casino revenue for April 2021

WV online casinos’ slow month was a 4% decrease in terms of revenue compared to the month prior.

In April, BetMGM Casino WV narrowly took the top spot in the state again. It made over $1.9 million over the course of the four weeks.

It took a little while for BetMGM to catch up to its main competition; however, this was the third consecutive month it led the way.

DraftKings Casino WV wasn’t far behind, with more than $1.7 million for the month.

Both online casinos exceeded $500,000 in weekly revenue at least once, but DraftKings’ worst week was significantly lower. It earned around just $310,000 for the week of April 17.

As mentioned, BetRivers is included in last month’s betting data. It produced about $135,000 in revenue in its first couple of weeks on the market. Of course, this amount should increase drastically in the upcoming weeks as more bettors become aware of its availability.

While it didn’t reach where it was last month, The Greenbrier is in a great position moving forward. Not only has its BetMGM app caught up to DraftKings, but also, it now is the only retail establishment to showcase two different online casinos.

Regardless of their popularity, two platforms are probably always going to create more income than one. Since The Greenbrier already owns one of the best options, its debut of FanDuel Casino could expand its current lead in the state even further.

It will be very interesting to see how both BetRivers and FanDuel perform in their first full month in the market.

WV online casino handle for April 2021

The WV online casinos struggled in regard to betting handle in April, too. Figures failed to hit $115 million, which was a 7% fall from March’s output.

The handle never surpassed $30 million for weekly bets, following a month in which they did on two separate occasions.

WV casinos did raise their low points, though. April’s worst weekly showing was almost $28 million, whereas the lowest in March was around $26 million.

Surprisingly, DraftKings Casino led all others, with over $60 million in monthly handle. Despite earning less revenue, DraftKings has remained ahead of BetMGM when taking bets.

Its handle beat BetMGM’s by at least $8 million in each of the last three months.

This smallest margin was from April, when BetMGM’s handle was almost $52 million.

DraftKings Casino saw its handle top $14 million in each week of the month, while BetMGM didn’t get there once.

BetRivers got on the board with more than $1 million in wagers in each of its first two weeks. It totaled slightly over $2.6 million in handle for April.

Even though it doesn’t appear BetMGM can take out DraftKings on its own, The Greenbrier is likely to pass Hollywood Casino with the addition of FanDuel.

Overall, online casino gaming in the state should continue to grow and reach new heights in May. Because the number of online casinos residents can utilize will be doubled, both revenue and handle could make sizable jumps next month.
