West Virginia sports betting is sure to get a considerable boost this fall.

The National Football League (NFL) is one of the most popular sports to bet on in the world and certainly in the US. In fact, many bettors wait all year just to wager on football.

How to bet on the NFL in West Virginia

West Virginia loves its football. Not having a home team doesn’t seem to stop football fever. Not to mention, there is plenty of excitement around West Virginia college football, too. Still, there is nothing like a good professional game between long-standing rivals.

This will be the first full NFL season with legal sports betting in the Mountain State. Last fall, sports betting was just beginning to roll out as NFL games got underway.

Mardi Gras Sportsbook and Wheeling Island Sportsbook remain sidelined until they find a new sports betting partner. That leaves three WV casinos with active sportsbooks.

Hollywood Sportsbook WV

Hollywood Sportsbook was the first WV sportsbook to open its betting windows. It is located just off the casino floor near Skybox Sports Bar. The sportsbook has 24 odds-display monitors and a 50-foot video wall with 80-inch TVs for keeping tabs on your favorite games.

Mountaineer Sportsbook

William Hill powers mountaineer Sportsbook. William Hill brings years of experience to the table and provides lounge-style seating around an impressive video wall.

FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier

The Greenbrier is a private casino club, and it partnered with FanDuel for its members-only sportsbook. Guests of the hotel are also eligible to place bets in the sportsbook and watch games on the 21 TVs located in the area.

NFL online betting in West Virginia

Unfortunately, there is no online sports betting in WV at this moment. The West Virginia Lottery is proceeding cautiously after the closure of BetLucky Sportsbook. The Lottery is also meticulous in ensuring compliance with the Wire Act.

Three online sportsbooks have been approved to operate in West Virginia:

While online launch dates are unknown, to date, DraftKings is the only online sports betting app to pass the required testing.

NFL teams West Virginia roots for

Without an NFL franchise in the state, West Virginia football fans root for one of four regional teams. Of course, fans aren’t limited to these teams. These are just the teams that most West Virginians search for when looking up:

  • NFL schedules
  • Conference standings for NFL teams
  • NFL game times

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2019 NFL season bruised and a little worse for the wear.  Add to that a difficult schedule and it could be a long year for the team.

Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are gone and Ben Roethlisberger is showing his age and doesn’t have the team he needs to work his magic.

Hopefully, the drama will have died down before the Steelers head to New England to face the Super Bowl champion Patriots in its season opener. Fans will have to wait until week 2 before cheering on their team home against the Seattle Seahawks.

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins open the season with a tough challenge. They play three division games in the first four weeks. For the team to be in contention for a playoff spot, they need a strong start.

With all that said, it may be a tough challenge to secure a strong start after letting go of three of its stars:

  • DeSean Jackson
  • Pierre Garcon
  • Chris Baker

The Redskins made the playoffs twice in the last seven years and a strong division performance is what got them there. Unfortunately for them, they face playoff teams in four of their first five games.

Baltimore Ravens

Defensive challenges face the Baltimore Ravens after losing half of its front seven:

  • OLB Za’Darius Smith
  • DL Brent Urban
  • C.J. Mosley
  • Terrell Suggs

The spots have been mostly filled from the bench which will leave the line without the experience or depth it needs to be as impactful as it was last year.

Last year’s offense was inconsistent at best. Lamar Jackson will likely continue to show some growing pains in his second year at quarterback. Luckily for the Ravens, their schedule includes 11 teams who did not make the playoffs last year.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals finally welcome a new head coach. It is too early to predict Zac Taylor‘s impact on the team.  After an impressive 4-1 start last year, the team suffered a string of injuries to finish the season 6-10.

The team enters 2019 healthier and veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has much to prove after sitting out the end of last season with a thumb injury.

If the team stays healthy and Dalton performs, the Bengals can contend. They could easily end up in last place if injuries start to flare up again.

NFL bet types

Whether you are new to NFL betting or need to brush up, here is an introduction to some NFL betting options.

Spread

Betting the spread is one of the most popular bets on the NFL. Oddsmakers establish the point spread by selecting the favorite team and estimating it will win by a certain number of points – called the spread.

If a player bets on the favorite, the team must win by more than the spread to win. A player can also bet on the underdog, hoping the favorite loses, or at the very least, wins by less than the spread.

Moneyline

Moneyline betting is the easiest bet to ake. All a player has to do is pick the winning team. There is no spread to cover, so the oddsmakers set the line to pay out favorites less and underdogs more when they win.

Totals

A player betting on NFL totals chooses whether the final score of a game will be over or under than the total posted.

Prop betting

Prop bets are game-specific bets are different for each game. A prop bet can include:

  • A team’s total touchdowns
  • A quarterback’s passing yards
  • The first team to score

Prop bets can consist of a variety of options. The more popular the game, the more prop bets are usually available. It can even include options such as the winner of the coin toss.

Parlay betting

A parlay bet is a bet that includes a series of at least two and up to 12 different bets. A player must win all of the individual bets in the series for the parlay bet to payout. If one of the bets loses, the entire series of bets lose. The more bets in the parlay, the higher the risk. The greater the risk, the bigger the payout.

Teaser

A teaser is a parlay bet where a player can lower the risk by adjusting the spread or total to create better odds of a team covering. Reducing the risk will obviously return a lower payout.

Buying Points

Players have an option to “buy” a half-point to reduce the risk on their original point spread bet. Of course, any time a player decreases their risk, it reduces the payout.

NFL futures

Futures betting are bets on future events. The most popular futures bet for the NFL before the season begins is who will win the Super Bowl. There are also futures on who will win each division and conference.

Round Robin

A round-robin bet takes the bets you want to make and generates multiple parlay bets.

For instance, a player wants to bet on three games. Instead of making a three-team parlay, a player can choose to round-robin and create three different two-team parlays.

NFL betting strategies

Now that you know some of the types of bets you can make here are some basics for NFL betting strategies.

Money management

Before you start betting on the NFL season determine how much money you can afford to lose and set it aside.

This is your bankroll. It can be a weekly bankroll, a monthly bankroll, or a full season bankroll.

Next, determine how much of your bankroll you will use for each game. Remember, this is about money management. Do not increase the size of your bets if you start winning or increase it to try and make up for losses.

Bet on the right games

To be a winner at sports betting, you have to find the games with an edge and leverage that to your advantage.

Do your research. Find what you think is an advantage and make bets based on that advantage. Some weeks may produce several advantages worth betting on. Others may provide none.

Don’t make the mistake of betting for the sake of betting. Bet to be a winner.

Shop the lines

One way to gain an advantage is to “line shop.” Line shopping is just looking at the different sportsbooks and comparing odds on the games you want to bet on.

It’s not uncommon to find different odds at different sportsbooks. Obviously, choose the one that’s in your favor.

Stay calm

Last but not least, one of the keys to being a successful bettor is to simply stay calm.

Keep in mind that the best NFL handicappers lose around 40% of the time.

Everyone loses at some point, and learning how to deal with it can be the difference between being a losing and winner bettor.

Make sure your head is clear, and your mind is focused before making a bet.
