Updated on September 11, 2019

The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular sports league to bet on in the US and West Virginia got a taste of it last season when live sportsbooks opened for the first time in-state.

In 2019 WV NFL bettors have it even better with two new online sportsbooks for betting on the NFL from anywhere in West Virginia.

WV NFL Betting Apps

West Virginia loves its football and not having a “home” NFL team doesn’t slow down its football fever. There’s plenty of action around West Virginia college football, too, but there’s nothing like a heated NFL rivalry to lay a point spread or moneyline bet on.

Legal sports betting in WV was rolled out just as NFL games got underway last year but in 2019 bettors can bet on every NFL game from start to finish.

While Mardi Gras Sportsbook and Wheeling Island Sportsbook remain sidelined until they find a new sports betting partner there are three WV casinos with active live sportsbooks right now and two legal sports betting apps.

DraftKings Sportsbook WV (Hollywood Casino Sportsbook)

Hollywood Sportsbook was the first WV sportsbook to open its betting windows. It is located just off the casino floor near Skybox Sports Bar. The sportsbook has 24 odds-display monitors and a 50-foot video wall with 80-inch TVs for keeping tabs on your favorite games.

For online NFL betting in WV Hollywood has partnered with DFS and sportsbook powerhouse DraftKings. The DraftKings online sportsbook went live in WV in August 2019 — just in time for NFL betting season.

Over 20,000 bets were taken on WV DraftKings over the first weekend of the NFL season alone so expect it to be a hot spot of action right through the Super Bowl.

A full slate of point spread, moneyline, parlays and prop/futures bets are available per week along with in game betting (Flash Bet). Real-money NFL Fantasy games are also available. Sportsbook pools (fixed-price pools of games where you match your bets vs. other players) are still to come.

You can bet on the NFL with WV DraftKings via the online sportsbook or the downloadable app for iPhone, iPad or Android. Get more info and access a $25 free welcome bet through the link on the review page here:

FanDuel Sportsbook WV (FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier)

The Greenbrier is a private casino club that partnered with FanDuel for its members-only sportsbook. Guests of the hotel can place bets in the sportsbook and watch games on the 21 TVs located in the area.

FanDuel Sportsbook WV launched its mobile sports betting app just in time for the start of the NFL season. What you’ll get on the FanDuel app or online sportsbook mirrors DraftKings pretty closely.

NFL betting lines and props are posted well in advance of each week’s games and futures odds are updated as the season progresses. Betting options run from the standard point spread, moneylines, over/unders, parlays etc to more complex round robins and Daily Fantasy (DFS) variations.

In play betting is also available on FanDuel Sportsbook WV. Get more info on the FanDuel Sportsbook app and access a $500 risk-free bet via the review page here:

William Hill Sportsbook WV (Mountaineer Sportsbook)

William Hill powers the Mountaineer Sportsbook where you can bet on NFL games in person each week. William Hill brings years of experience to the table and provides lounge-style seating around an impressive video wall.

The West Virginia Lottery has approved the online William Hill Sportsbook to operate in the state but there is no set launch date at this time.

In total there are 15 licenses for WV online sportsbooks available with only three firmly spoken for right now. That means there will be plenty of online launch dates to come.

NFL Teams West Virginia Likes to Bet On

Without an NFL franchise in the state West Virginia football fans tend to root for one of four regional teams. Of course, fans aren’t limited to just betting on these teams; these are just the teams that most West Virginians search for when looking up:

  • NFL schedules
  • Conference standings for NFL teams
  • NFL game times

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2019 NFL season a little worse for wear.  Add to that a difficult schedule and it could be a long season for the team.

Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown are gone and Ben Roethlisberger is showing his age. He doesn’t have the team he needs to work his magic.

Things didn’t go as planned when the Steelers hit New England to face the Super Bowl champion Patriots in its season opener; bettors are looking to bounce back in Week 2 and beyond after their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Current DraftKings odds on Steelers winning Super Bowl LIV: +2000

Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins open the season with three division games in the first four weeks. To content for a playoff spot they’ll need a strong start. That said, it may be a challenge to start strong after letting go of three of its stars:

  • DeSean Jackson
  • Pierre Garcon
  • Chris Baker

The Redskins made the playoffs twice in the last seven years and a strong division performance is what got them there. Unfortunately for them, they face playoff teams in four of their first five games.

Current DraftKings odds on Redskins winning Super Bowl LIV: +12500

Baltimore Ravens

Defensive challenges face the Baltimore Ravens after losing half of its front seven:

  • OLB Za’Darius Smith
  • DL Brent Urban
  • C.J. Mosley
  • Terrell Suggs

The spots have been mostly filled from the bench which will leave the line without the experience or depth it needs to be as impactful as it was last year.

Last year’s offense was inconsistent at best. Lamar Jackson dazzled as he lit up the Dolphins for 5 TDs in Week 1 but can he carry it over into the next few games? Luckily for the Ravens, their schedule includes 11 teams who did not make the playoffs last year.

Current DraftKings odds on Ravens winning Super Bowl LIV: +2500

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals finally welcome a new head coach but it’s too early to predict Zac Taylor‘s impact on the team. After an impressive 4-1 start last year, the team suffered a string of injuries to finish the season 6-10.

The team enters 2019 healthier and veteran quarterback Andy Dalton has much to prove after sitting out the end of last season with a thumb injury.

If the team stays healthy and Dalton performs, the Bengals can contend. They could easily end up in last place if injuries start to flare up again.

Current DraftKings odds on Bengals winning Super Bowl LIV: +15000

NFL Bet Types

Here’s a quick introduction to the most popular NFL betting options.

Point Spread

Betting the spread is one of the most popular bets on the NFL. Oddsmakers establish the point spread by selecting the favorite team and estimating it will win by a certain number of points – called the spread.

If a player bets on the favorite, the team must win by more than the point spread to win. A player can also bet on the underdog, hoping the favorite loses or at, the very least, wins by less than the spread.

If a team is listed as -2.5 points, for example, that means it is the favorite in the game and must win by over 2.5 points to win the bet. The underdog would be +2.5 points, which means it can lose by up to 2 points and still win the bet.

Moneyline betting is the easiest NFL bet to make. All a player has to do is pick the winning team. There is no spread to cover so the oddsmakers set the line to pay out favorites less and underdogs more when they win.

The favorite will be listed as a minus (-) and the underdog as a plus (+). The number represent how much you’ll win per $100 bet.

Eg. Bengals +250 means they are the underdog and a $100 bet will pay out $350 (your original wager plus $250).

Bengals -250 means they are the favorite and a $250 bet will pay out an added $100 (for $350 total)

You obviously don’t have to bet $100 for any bet – it’s just a useful baseline for understanding what your payout will be.

Online betting slips are great because you can enter in the bets you’d like to make and see what the payout would be based on the odds before you have to finalize your bet.

A player betting on NFL totals chooses whether the final score of a game will be over or under than the total posted.

Prop Betting

Prop bets are game-specific bets that are different for each game. An NFL prop bet can be:

  • A team’s total touchdowns
  • A quarterback’s passing yards
  • The first team to score

Prop bets can consist of a variety of options. The more popular the game, the more prop bets are usually available. It can even include options such as the winner of the coin toss.

Parlay Betting

A parlay bet is a bet that includes a series of at least two and up to 12 different bets. A player must win all of the individual bets in the series for the parlay bet to payout.

If one of the bets loses, the entire series of bets lose. The more bets in the parlay, the higher the risk; the greater the risk, the bigger the payout.

A teaser is a parlay bet where a player can lower the risk by adjusting the spread or total to create better odds of a team covering. Reducing the risk will obviously return a lower payout.

Buying Points

Players have an option to “buy” a half-point to reduce the risk on their original point spread bet. Of course, any time a player decreases their risk, it reduces the payout.

NFL Futures

Futures betting are bets on future events. The most popular futures bet for the NFL before the season begins is who will win the Super Bowl. There are also futures on who will win each division and conference.

Round Robin

A round-robin bet takes the bets you want to make and generates multiple parlay bets.

For instance, a player wants to bet on three games. Instead of making a three-team parlay, a player can choose to round-robin it and create three different two-team parlays.

Basic NFL Betting Strategy

Now that you know some of the types of bets you can make here are some basics for NFL betting strategies.

Bet on the right games

To be a winner at sports betting, you have to find the games with an edge and leverage that to your advantage.

Do your research. Find what you think is an advantage and make bets based on that advantage. Some weeks may produce several advantages worth betting on. Others may provide none.

Don’t make the mistake of betting for the sake of betting. Bet to be a winner.

Shop the lines

One way to gain an advantage is to “line shop.” Line shopping is just looking at the different sportsbooks and comparing odds on the games you want to bet on.

It’s not uncommon to find different odds at different sportsbooks. Obviously, choose the one that’s in your favor.

Stay clear

One of the keys to being a successful bettor is to simply stay calm. Keep in mind that the best NFL handicappers lose around 40% of the time.

Everyone loses at some point, and learning how to deal with it can be the difference between being a losing and winner bettor. Make sure your head is clear and your mind is focused before making a bet.

Money management

Before you start betting on the NFL season determine how much money you can afford to lose and set it aside.

This is your bankroll. It can be a weekly bankroll, a monthly bankroll, or a full season bankroll.

Next, determine how much of your bankroll you will use for each game. Remember, this is about money management. Don’t increase the size of your bets if you start winning or increase it to try and make up for losses.
