With legal gaming continuing to proliferate in the US and in West Virginia, responsible gambling will always be a topic of discussion.

Responsible gaming is top of mind in September, as the American Gaming Association highlights this month as Responsible Gambling Education Month.

Operators are required to provide responsible gambling tools within their online casinos and sportsbooks. Some, like FanDuel Casino, do even more to spread awareness and promote responsible gaming.

FanDuel Casino provides responsible gambling guidelines

To access FanDuel’s responsible gaming tools in the FanDuel Casino app, tap “account” then scroll down to the “player protection” section.

The first option, “Responsible gaming,” provides some information, including a quick video with five tips on gambling responsibly. Tap the second option to go straight to “set user limits.”

The featured video is a must-watch for anyone using gambling apps. Even for those who don’t plan to use the tools available in the app, the tips presented are the essential guidelines for keeping your gambling habits responsible:

  1. Set a budget
  2. Set a time limit
  3. Don’t chase losses
  4. Never borrow money to gamble
  5. Remember that gambling is only entertainment, not a way to get rich

Using FanDuel Casino’s user limits

User limits include global deposit limits, wager limits, maximum wager size limits and time limits.

Use the global deposit limit to set the amount you can deposit within a set time period, such as $150 every seven days. This simple tool will keep you within a budget and ensure you don’t go over. If you want to increase the limit, there is a three-day waiting period before it takes effect.

Wager limits and maximum wager size limits work similarly, but they only affect how much you can wager, not how much you can deposit. You might choose to set a weekly or monthly deposit limit, as well as a daily wager limit, for example.

Setting a time limit is pretty self-explanatory, and allows you to set a maximum daily time you can be logged in to the FanDuel website or app.

FanDuel offers timeout and self-exclusion tools

If you need to take a break from online gambling, there are two options that will ensure you can’t access FanDuel Casino even if you try. Using the timeout option allows you to disable your account for any length of time, from three days to 365 days.

To take a break for an extended period of time, there is a self-exclusion option. Upon self-excluding, you won’t be able to log in to your FanDuel account, and you’ll be removed from any promotional marketing lists, as well. You can also self-exclude from all gambling through the state. The West Virginia list applies to all online and brick-and-mortar gambling venues within the state.

FanDuel Casino’s reality checks pop up from time to time, reminding you how long you’ve been logged in. The app also allows you to turn on reminders at a set increment of time. For example, the WV online casino will remind you how long you’ve been playing every 30 minutes.

Another feature that doesn’t require users to opt-in is the Deposit Threshold. Once you’ve deposited a total of $2,500 in the FanDuel app, you’re required to agree that you’ve read its Responsible Play Statement before being able to continue using the platform.

FanDuel’s recent responsible gaming initiatives

FanDuel goes beyond the requirements to promote responsible gambling. This year, the company added two more RG ambassadors: American soccer player and Olympic gold medalist Carli Lloyd, and PGA Tour golfer Tom Kim. The new duo join the original RG ambassador Craig Carton and a host of guest-stars in commercials and ad campaigns on responsible gaming.

If you watch football, you’ve seen the humorous, but informative ad spots where sports fans share their betting “system.” Spoiler alert: the system is using FanDuel’s built-in responsible gambling tools to keep betting entertaining.

FanDuel is also partnering with Front Office Sports on an education program for those that work in the sports industry. In a recent press release, FanDuel Sustainability and Responsible Gaming Vice President, Alison Kutler, commented on the multifaceted approach to promoting responsible play, saying:

“FanDuel remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting responsible gaming, and we’re thrilled to be rolling out this series of programming to mark Responsible Gaming Education Month. Bringing Carli and Tom on as RG ambassadors who can spread the message of safer play combined with debuting new advertising, social media content and a Front Office Sports training, highlight how we want to elevate the standard for operator efforts on responsible gaming.”
