BetMGM remains one of the most popular West Virginia online casino operators, but the company recently came under fire.
In mid-November, fraudulent online accounts were created. These accounts used professional poker players’ personal information and made unauthorized bank withdrawals. Some withdrawals neared $10,000.
Victims of the scam included Todd Witteles, a California native and professional poker player, who had a BetMGM account opened in his name in West Virginia with a $10,000 deposit from his checking account.
In an ESPN report, Witteles said he’s never been to West Virginia, nor does he have an account with any BetMGM site. The scammers then withdrew $7,500 of that initial deposit and put it into a Venmo debit card.
Shortly after, the remaining $2,500 went into the same Venmo debit card. “They withdrew to a different account on the same day without ever playing on the account,” Witteles told ESPN.
BetMGM is aware of the situation and taking it seriously
BetMGM issued a statement to ESPN, saying it is aware of the incident and will continue to investigate. A BetMGM spokesperson said:
“The security of our patrons’ accounts is of the utmost importance to us. We encourage any impacted patrons to contact our customer service department directly.”
One of BetMGM’s deposit options, Global Payments Gambling Solutions, is looking into the matter as well. The online payment processor released a statement saying it was assisting police with the ongoing investigation.
According to ESPN’s report, some of the professional poker players have already received their funds back from the incident. Others, like Witteles, are still working to get their money back.
Witteles told ESPN:
“This is definitely the worst case of any kind of bank account theft in poker history. I’ve seen cheating scandals at the poker table, online and live, that have resulted in bigger thefts than this, but as far as directly stealing out of people’s bank accounts, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
BetMGM suggests 3 ways customers can stay protected
Shortly after the November incident, BetMGM sent an email to its customers outlining three ways they can better protect their accounts.
The online casino recommends customers change their password. Their password becomes stronger if it’s unique, not one that they use for any other online gambling account.
BetMGM also offers two-factor authentication. Upon attempted login, a security code will be sent to a user’s phone. They’ll be prompted to enter that code into the app as part of their login process every time they try to access their account.
BetMGM users can also opt into email alerts. Once these alerts are turned on, users will receive an email at every login.
“Taking these necessary steps will help ensure the continued security of your personal information,” BetMGM’s email read.
