The West Virginia gaming industry isn’t on the level of Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Michigan, but the Mountain State has boasted some impressive numbers, despite its size.

West Virginia online casinos have added a huge boost to revenue totals for the state. However, the retail casino space in West Virginia has also provided tons of jobs for locals around the area, currently supporting over 8,000 of them.

Retail West Virginia casinos produce plenty of jobs

West Virginia features five casinos throughout the Mountain State, all of which have hotels:

  • Hollywood Casino Charles Town
  • Wheeling Island
  • Mountaineer Casino
  • Mardi Gras Casino
  • The Greenbrier

All five facilities combined to create 8,347 jobs, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA).

Businesses are not required to list a specific number of employees.

However, each casino does have a range of total people it employs, according to Indeed:

  • Hollywood Casino Charles Town: 1,000 to 5,000
  • Wheeling Island: 501 to 1,000
  • Mountaineer Casino: 1,001 to 5,000
  • Mardi Gras Casino: n/a
  • The Greenbrier: 501 to 1,000

Which West Virginia casino is the best to work for?

Indeed also grades the casino based on responses from surveys regarding work well-being. Wheeling Island Casino recorded the highest grade of a 78, which included the following results for the establishment:

  • Happiness: High
  • Purpose: Above average
  • Stress-free: High
  • Satisfaction: Above average

Wheeling Island employees also feel very supported. In aspects that influence work well-being, Wheeling Island Casino reported a “high” score in the following areas:

  • Appreciation
  • Achievement
  • Support
  • Energy
  • Management
  • Learning
  • Inclusion
  • Belonging
  • Trust

The casino reported an “above average” score in flexibility and an “average” score in compensation.

Mountaineer Casino registered the second-highest score with a 70. Employees submitted average happiness and satisfaction categories, while providing above average grades in the stress-free area. It reported a below average score in purpose.

The casino logged average scores in the achievement, support and energy areas.

Economic impact of WV casinos surpasses $1 billion

The economic impact of West Virginia casinos exceeded $1 billion, with an average gross gaming revenue of $769.2 million in 2022, according to the AGA.

During the Fiscal Year 2022/2023, West Virginia casinos produced $498.3 million in gross terminal revenue, with Hollywood Casino Charles Town leading the way:

Hollywood Charles Town is clearly above the others in revenue, but Wheeling Island is taking control of workplace well-being.
