The Powerball drawing from Wednesday, May 10, brought life-changing money to one West Virginia resident.
According to the West Virginia Lottery, a player named David G. redeemed a $500,000 winning ticket after matching four of five winning numbers and the Powerball. The ticket was sold at Hammer’s Market in the 2,300-person town of Shinnston, in Harrison County.
The winning numbers from the draw were 21, 24, 33, 55, and 69. The Powerball was 3.
One away from the jackpot
All five numbers and the Powerball must hit to win the grand prize, which was estimated at $109 million. Powerball is one of three multistate draw games offered through the West Virginia Lottery. The other two are Mega Millions and Lotto America.
In total, 16 players from across the US missed the jackpot by one ball. One California player accurately selected all five winning numbers but missed the Powerball, which was good for $1 million.
The other 15 players hit four of five numbers, plus the Powerball, to lock up $50,000 each. Six, including David G., bought the Power Play at a 10x multiplier to boost their winnings to $500K.
Big hits for WV Powerball players this year
West Virginia has produced a handful of near-jackpot Powerball winners in 2023. That’s not bad for a state with well under 2 million residents.
The most recent came on Monday, May 15, when a player won $50,000 for selecting four winning numbers and the Powerball.
Other $50,000 wins this year from WV:
- A winning ticket was sold in Davis, 60 miles southeast of Morgantown, on April 12. Officials did not publish the retailer nor the winner’s name.
- The March 6 drawing produced two $50K winners, one from West Virginia.
- One of nine $50K winners from the Feb. 25 drawing came from West Virginia. Five more won $150K from playing the multiplier, and four players (from DE, NC, TX, and IL) became millionaires.
- The first West Virginian to win $50K in 2023 did so during the Jan. 18 drawing. The five-figure ticket came from Berkley and was one of 22 nationwide.
Estimated jackpot up to $162 million for May 20 drawing
The Powerball jackpot increases every time nobody wins the grand prize. It now sits at an estimated $162 million, or $83.2 million as a lump-sum cash value.
West Virginia players can purchase tickets at nearly 1,500 retailers statewide or online via Jackpocket’s desktop and mobile apps.
The deadline for purchasing tickets is 9:59 p.m. on the days of drawings.
Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The next Powerball drawing is Saturday, May 20.
